Long used for diseases and infections of the lungs. Used in many herbal cough mixtures, as it can both soothe a dry, irritated cough and encourage the expulsion of phlegm trapped in the lungs. Also reputed to help expel dust, tar and other pollutants from the lungs, and a weekly dose of coltsfoot tea can be beneficial to smokers, people with dust allergies or anyone who works in a polluted environment. The leaves and flowers have been used in herbal tobacco.
